3 Tools For Relieving Tight Muscles

Sometimes muscle tightness and pain can hinder your ability to work out and move freely. This discomfort may come from regular strenuous exercise, or repetitive movements in your daily life. Here are my top 3 recommendations for clients dealing with these issues:

  1. Foam Roller

This tool is a must have for people who sit in cars, at desks, or in front of patients all day for work. Over the course of time, hip stiffness can become a problem, but the foam roller can help. Related issues may include tightness in the glutes, and lower back.  The foam roller covers these areas really well.  Foam rolling before and sometimes after a workout is recommended for everyone, including athletes.

  2. Lacrosse/Massage Ball

Whereas the foam roller is good for larger muscle groups, the massage ball is great for harder to reach areas like your upper middle back, shoulders, and upper chest.   If left untreated these tight areas can lead to tension headaches, neck stiffness, and shoulder pain.   This tool has specifically helped my clients who work in construction, dentistry, and the beauty industry. But even if you just hold general stress from life in your back and shoulders, you might want to give this ball a try.

  3. Massage Gun

This made it to number three on my list because most of my clients prefer not to think use electric devices for muscle relief. It's also the most expensive item in this article. However, there are those who like a good piece of technology, and would appreciate deeper, and more targeted tissue work. Handheld devices may also feel easier to manipulate and use. If this describes you, then give a massage gun a try! Keep in mind you may need to read the manual, find the right pressure setting for your use, and make sure your battery is charged.

Please note: If pain persists or increases after you've tried the methods above, consult your physician, physical therapist, or chiropractor for diagnosis and treatment!
