A lack of energy can impact your workouts, and slow you down toward reaching your fitness goals. Many clients experience reduced energy when life on the job gets busy, a child is born, new medication is introduced for a health condition, or sleep patterns are affected by stress and anxiety. When you’re tired, you’re more likely to injure yourself while training. Furthermore the workout seems less fulfilling. I recommend a few helpful supplements, but first make sure you are trying to get adequate sleep, and eat enough clean food to support your active lifestyle. Energy comes primarily from FOOD, and quality rest. When that's not enough, you might need a little help before you hit the gym. Here are my top recommendations (listed in order of importance) to give you the boost you need for your workouts.
Creatine
Creatine is produced by the body, and is made up of molecules that produce energy at a cellular level. It is used up very quickly, especially during intense exercise. Taking a creatine supplement will replenish these molecules and help you push through your exercise time with more power and less fatigue. Studies have also shown that creatine can improve the function of your brain which is part of your nervous system. This can translate to more mental clarity and focus. Because it can boost your endurance and help you stay alert, creatine takes my number 1 spot.
Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s)
Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein, and serve many functions in the human body. Certain amino acids help produce growth hormones, and the energy you need to exercise. Aside from energy production, BCAA’s help build and repair muscle tissue. This allows faster recovery from your last workout. BCAA’s are not produced within the body and must come from a diet that preferably includes dairy, meat, and eggs. Since many of us don’t get enough BCAA’s from our diets and their importance in exercise performance, BCAA’s are number 2 on this list.
Beta-Alanine
Beta Alanine, like creatine, can help delay muscle fatigue during your workouts. It is an amino acid that helps convert your blood sugar into energy. Beta-alanine also decreases the lactic acid buildup in your muscles when you do strength training. This allows you to work out harder and a bit longer.
B Complex Vitamins
B Complex Vitamins are an honorable mention here. They will NOT give you a burst of energy right before a workout! However, when taken daily they contribute to healthy energy levels. Take this supplement especially if your diet is low in meat, dairy, or grains.
